But trust me, in 20 years<br \/>\n you\u2019ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can\u2019t grasp now how<br \/>\nmuch possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.  You\u2019re not as<br \/>\n fat as you imagine.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying<br \/>\n to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.  The real troubles in your life are apt<br \/>\nto be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you<br \/>\nat 4 pm on  some idle Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Do one thing every day that scares you.<\/p>\n<p>Sing.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be reckless with other people\u2019s hearts, don\u2019t put up with people who are<br \/>\nReckless  with yours.<\/p>\n<p>Floss.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you\u2019re ahead, sometimes you\u2019re<br \/>\n behind. The race is long, and in the end, it\u2019s only with yourself.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\n<strong>Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements<\/strong>.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\nStretch.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t feel guilty if you don\u2019t know what you want to do with your life.  The most<br \/>\ninteresting people I know didn\u2019t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their<br \/>\n lives, some of the most interesting 40 year old I know still don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Get plenty of calcium.<\/p>\n<p>Be kind to your knees, you\u2019ll miss them when they\u2019re gone.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019ll marry, maybe you won\u2019t, maybe you\u2019ll have children, maybe you<br \/>\n won\u2019t, maybe you\u2019ll divorce at 40, maybe you\u2019ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th<br \/>\n wedding anniversary.  Whatever you do, don\u2019t congratulate yourself too much or berate<br \/>\nyourself either.  Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else\u2019s.  Enjoy your body,<br \/>\n use it every way you can.  Don\u2019t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it\u2019s the<br \/>\n greatest instrument you\u2019ll ever own\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Dance.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.<\/p>\n<p>Read the directions, even if you don\u2019t follow them.<\/p>\n<p>Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.<\/p>\n<p>Get to know your parents, you never know when they\u2019ll be gone for good.<\/p>\n<p>Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely<br \/>\n to stick with you in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on.<br \/>\n  Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get,<br \/>\n the more you need the people who you knew when you were young.<\/p>\n<p>Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern<br \/>\nCalifornia once, but leave before it makes you soft.<\/p>\n<p>Travel.<\/p>\n<p>Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will<br \/>\n get old, and when you do you\u2019ll fantasize that when you were young prices were<br \/>\n reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.<\/p>\n<p>Respect your elders.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t expect anyone else to support you.  Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have<br \/>\n a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you\u2019re 40, it will look 85.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it.
